James Wusterbarth
James Wusterbarth has led a life marked by diversity and dedication, weaving through various career paths such as military service, teaching at a graduate level, regional broadcasting, federal law enforcement, and international contracting. His journey into the professional world kicked off in the 1990s in Washington D.C., where he worked at the Center for Counterterrorism Studies, giving bi-monthly briefings on Osama Bin Laden and various other terrorist leaders. This work led to his commissioning as a U.S. Naval Officer—a role he embraced enthusiastically and committed to. He stood out in his military training, specifically during the grueling Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL training, completing Hellweek, never quitting, and demonstrating his extreme resilience and mental fortitude. Although he did not secure a position in the Naval Special Warfare Community, his exceptional performance did not go unnoticed. He was given the rare opportunity to transfer directly to Naval Flight School to undergo pilot training. He was deployed all throughout the Mediterranean and took part in both Operation Allied Force and Operation Enduring Freedom. This period of his life underscored the commendations and high regard he consistently received from his superiors and colleagues.
Beyond his military service, he has persistently sought learning and skill development opportunities. His list of acquired credentials is vast. He holds multiple FAA Pilot Licenses, a DOT Merchant Mariner Master Captain's License up to 25 tons, various boating instructor licenses, and a PADI Master Diver certification. His extensive experience of more than 35 years as an elite emergency responder is further exemplified through a versatile array of expert level positions such as: a Federal Law Enforcement Ranger with additional certifications and service in all five field environments: Aviation, Backcountry, Urban, Maritime, and Arctic. He holds a Red Card for Wildland Firefighting including the more rare add-on Skydiving Certification through USPA, a decade of service as a National Ski Patrol, an Oceanic Lifeguard Instructor, a National Registry Licensed EMT, an ICS Search And Rescue Coordinator, and a FEMA SAR Manager, along with numerous others. Whatever and wherever the emergency, James is highly experienced and extensively trained to manage complex assets during times of crisis, or simply help out on the front lines.
This unusual versatility and dedication to service was profoundly evident following the 9/11 attacks, where he voluntarily drove through the night to Ground Zero to assist in extremely hazardous conditions. His unwavering commitment to volunteerism has been a constant throughout his life, dedicating thousands of hours to helping those in need during disasters and emergencies worldwide. By 2023, his global impact and experiences have spanned an impressive amount of work in 34 countries, with personal travels extending that number to more than 50 nations.
"With a passion for understanding everything relating to the human body, James stretched himself and was admitted into a challenging post-graduate program at Harvard Medical School. Undaunted by the level of coursework, he successfully completed an Integrative and Clinical Nutrition Sciences program. His academically imposing class of fellow graduates comprised more than 100 top-level, board certified physicians, and James."
